# Arabic sofas as statement pieces in a modern living room

An Arabic sofa statement piece is a majlis whose color, pattern or scale leads the room, while the walls, rug and curtains are chosen to support it rather than compete with it. The idea is old: an Ottoman cushion cover from around 1600, attributed to Bursa and held by The Met, sets rows of floral medallions on a crimson velvet ground.

## Questions buyers ask

### Can the seat be one color and the backrest another?

Two-tone seating is a common request: one shade on the seats and another on the backrests or accent pieces, or pairings such as red with gold or black with gold. Send a photo or a short video of the room, floor and walls included, and the designer suggests combinations that suit it. You see the proposed colors before production.

### What fabric are the sofas made of?

Upholstery options include velvet on most made-to-measure majlis, woven jacquard for traditional patterns, linen-look weaves and tightly woven cotton-polyester blends on many ready-size floor sets. The wooden bench line uses a thick kilim-style weave. Colors look different on screens, so ask for close-up videos of the exact fabric.

## What makes a majlis the statement in a living space, not the background?

A sofa usually stands against one wall, but [majlis seating](https://orientalsofa.com/what-is-arabic-sofa/) runs along two or three walls at once, so its color and pattern cover more of the room than almost any other piece. That length is what turns it into a statement. A deep color, a strong border or a large medallion repeated along about 224 in (570 cm) of seating in a U-shaped set holds the room on its own, and everything else can step back. A plain set in a quiet color does the opposite and hands the lead to the rug or the walls.

## What did Ottoman yastık covers show about seating as ornament?

A *yastık* (cushion cover) was a rectangular textile made for palace and wealthy Ottoman interiors, usually on a dominant red velvet ground with the main design framed at each end by bands of repeating motifs, and its production is generally traced to Bursa. The Met's example from around 1600 combines silk, cotton and metal-wrapped thread in cut and voided velvet, a technique known as *çatma*. Covers like these made the seat itself the most decorated surface in a reception room. More stories on textiles and the rooms built around them are gathered in [the atelier's journal](https://orientalsofa.com/atelier/).

## Can a patterned majlis lead a modern room without looking out of place?

A patterned majlis looks deliberate in a modern room when everything around it keeps to modern lines: plain walls, a low table with a simple shape, metal or glass in place of carving, and no second pattern competing at the same height. Traditional borders and medallions read as intentional when they are the only ornament in sight, and as clutter when they meet patterned wallpaper and a busy rug. I like a single strong velvet color on the seats with the pattern kept to the backrests, which sits comfortably in an apartment with white walls and oak floors.

## Which bold colors hold a room without tiring the eye?

Navy blue, maroon and green are our most requested colors, and all three stay deep from midday through to lamplight without glaring. Most models can be made in any color from the fabric range, with gold accents optional, so a pattern you like in one color can be ordered in a deeper or quieter one. Solid colors are chosen by name and number from a numbered swatch catalog, which means a shade nobody has photographed yet is still possible. I prefer one bold color per room, with a second only in the trim or the pouf pillows.

## How quiet should the walls, rug and curtains be around it?

The Damascus Room at The Met shows the opposite arrangement: a reception room whose walls carry the ornament, built of poplar paneling with gesso relief, gold and tin leaf, glazes and paint, with a small fountain at its threshold. In a room like that, any seating does best to stay calm. A statement majlis turns the balance around, with walls in one light color, curtains in a solid shade taken from the seat fabric and a rug with a quiet field and a single border. A plain seat lets a patterned rug speak. Two loud patterns end up shouting.

## How do you keep a strong color from fading?

Light is the main threat to a deep color. Textile dyes are usually rated for lightfastness, their resistance to fading in light, on a scale of one to eight, with higher numbers fading less, and strong afternoon sun through a large window tests every one of them. Keep the boldest run of seating out of direct sun, or draw a sheer across the window during the brightest hours. Covers unzip and can be machine-washed on a gentle 86°F (30°C) cycle, and moving backrests between a sunny wall and a shaded one from time to time evens out the wear. More on stains and sun is in [fabric cleaning and fading tips](https://orientalsofa.com/fabric-cleaning-and-maintenance-tips/).

## Which pieces carry the look: backrests, bolsters or pouf pillows?

The pattern of a statement set usually lives on the pieces at eye level. Each 75 in (190 cm) seat takes two backrests of 37.5 × 16 × 4 in (95 × 40 × 10 cm), and a 23.5 × 16 × 4 in (60 × 40 × 10 cm) corner backrest closes each corner, so a U-shaped set shows six long backrests and two short ones above its seats. Armrests and round bolsters at the ends of each run frame the pattern, pouf pillows of 27.5 × 19.5 in (70 × 50 cm) repeat it lower down, and a 23.5 × 23.5 × 8 in (60 × 60 × 20 cm) ottoman table can take it into the middle of the room.

- Patterned backrests over solid seats, the safest statement and the easiest to live with.
- Solid backrests with patterned armrests, which frame each run with ornament at the ends.
- Two-tone velvet, with one color on the seats and a deeper one on the backrests and pouf pillows.
- Gold trim, or none at all, since accents are optional on most models.

*One strong teal velvet, with the ogee pattern kept to the armrests at the end of each run.*

A statement in one strong color can start from [plain and trellis velvet floor sofas](https://orientalsofa.com/velvet-sofa/), where the color is chosen first and the pattern second.

My pairing for a white-walled living room: maroon velvet seats, backrests patterned in maroon and cream, an oatmeal kilim with one narrow border and a single warm lamp in the corner.

## Frequently asked questions

### What was an Ottoman yastık?

A yastık was a rectangular cushion cover made for palace and wealthy Ottoman interiors, usually in red velvet with its design framed at both ends by bands of repeating motifs. Production is generally traced to Bursa, and museum examples date from around 1600.

### How many strong colors can one majlis room carry?

Most rooms settle best with one dominant color and one accent, plus a neutral for the walls and the field of the rug. A third strong color usually ends up competing with the seating, so keep it to small things such as a tray, a lamp or a single pillow.

### Should a statement majlis face the door?

Where the layout allows, put the boldest run of seating on the wall you see first from the doorway, so the room introduces itself in one look. Keep the wall behind the door for quieter pieces, and avoid placing the strongest pattern under a bright window, where glare flattens it.
