# Arabic Majlis for Connecticut Homes: Planned Around Doors, Slopes and Coffee Corners

A Connecticut family that hosts ten needs about 299 in (760 cm) of seating, while a standard 224 in (570 cm) U seats only eight or nine adults, so an Arabic majlis in Connecticut is planned by guest count first. The Istanbul atelier divides each wall into equal seats, none longer than 75 in (190 cm); a door or a sloped ceiling just shortens a run.

## Questions buyers ask

### My room is 144 × 144 in (366 × 366 cm). Will the jalsa be drawn as an L or as a U?

Two measurements may describe two seating walls, making an L a provisional option; a U needs a third seating wall. The designer must confirm the shape on the drawing before these figures are final. The second run stops 27.5 in (70 cm) short of the corner, leaving two seats of 72 in (183 cm) on one wall and two of 58 in (148 cm) on the other. Name every wall that gets seating.

### I like a U set but in black and grey. Is that possible, and how can I judge the color without seeing it in person?

True black is not available in the patterned ranges, and a very dark navy or charcoal comes closest; plain colors are chosen from a numbered color card. Ask us about fabric swatches and a foam sample before you order. We don't have a showroom; ask us for a sample box or a video call.

## Which layout seats a Connecticut family of ten: L, U or split runs?

Most Connecticut homes are single-family houses, so a family room usually offers one long wall to build from. One seat of up to 75 in (190 cm) takes two to three adults, which puts ten guests at about four seats. Our US majlis guide keeps the piece counts for each standard shape, and the [majlis layouts](https://orientalsofa.com/majlis-layouts/) page compares the shapes.

| Shape | Seats | Seating run | Adults |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Single wall | 1 | 75 in (190 cm) | 2 to 3 |
| L-shape | 2 | about 150 in (380 cm) | 5 to 6 |
| U-shape | 3 | 224 in (570 cm) | 8 to 9 |
| Ten guests | 4 or more | about 299 in (760 cm) | about 10 |

## How do you measure a room with a short door wall and a sloped ceiling?

1. Begin with the wall the door shortens: measure only the stretch that stays free, up to the casing, and note which way the door swings.
2. Mark where a sloped ceiling drops below sitting height, since nobody sits in that corner and the run stops before it.
3. Keep the entrance walkway clear on the sketch before counting seats, and let the nearest run end at the edge of the path.
4. Say which figures describe the room and which describe the seating you want, because the drawing treats them differently.

> A family in Connecticut wanted a blue U-shaped majlis with side walls of about 212 in (538 cm) and a back wall of 192 in (488 cm). A section of 48 in (122 cm) in one corner sat under a sloped roof where nobody could sit, and they needed a walkway of about 36 in (91 cm) at the entrance. The first premium plan used the full room size. The family explained those were room measurements, not seating lengths, and asked for a version built on our standard set with added cushions, plus a cushion-top table for the low corner. Our team asked for a sketch, offered a video call, and drew an L-shape with an extra sofa in a palace-style navy fabric. After a family discussion, they chose two standard U-sets to arrange themselves.

Every opening gets a line on the printable worksheet in our measuring guide, and the majlis planner redraws the layout whenever a length changes.

## How high should the seat be, a hand-span or sofa height?

Four steps cover most rooms: 4 in (10 cm) for classic floor seating, 8 in (20 cm) for everyday use, 12 in (30 cm) for mixed ages and 16 in (40 cm), about the height of a regular sofa seat; a wooden-base model sits at 14.5 in (37 cm) to 16 in (40 cm) depending on the model. If a height arrives as a hand-span, turn it into inches before the quote is drawn. Each build is shown among our [Arabic majlis sets](https://orientalsofa.com/arabic-majlis/).

> A buyer in Connecticut sent a screenshot of a design she liked and her room sizes: one wall of about 207 in (526 cm), the opposite wall 156 in (396 cm), and a third side shortened to 108 in (274 cm) by a door. She asked for seating one hand-span high, and whether a traditional brazier for dallah coffee pots was available. Our team asked what that height meant in inches; she said five, the team suggested 4 in (10 cm) as the closest standard step, and she agreed. She then asked for photos of models and colors and was sent the floor seating video gallery to choose a design for the three walls.

I write the finished height beside the fabric code on every sketch.

## Where does the coffee corner go, and which table sits beside the seats?

A coffee corner needs clear floor more than furniture. The foam ottoman table is 23.5 × 23.5 × 8 in (60 × 60 × 20 cm) and is made to match the seating: about 8 in (20 cm) high suits standard sets, and a raised majlis takes one up to 16 in (40 cm). A table set can also ring one large center table with four smaller ones. A charcoal manqal for dallah pots is not part of our regular range, so check with the team before planning around one.

> I shade the coffee corner on the sketch before drawing a seat. A gap at the end of a run is not a mistake. It is where the ottoman lives.

## Wooden base or all foam: what changes in a Connecticut living room?

Most designs can be built with or without a wooden base, and the drawing stays the same either way. All-foam majlis models come in two main heights, 12 in (30 cm) and about 16 in (40 cm), while a wooden-base model sits at 14.5 in (37 cm) to 16 in (40 cm) depending on the model. Our Sedir Bench line is built on a solid pine frame with a heavy kilim-style weave and sits firmer than foam, and storage under the seat is possible on wooden bases.

## How does an order reach Connecticut?

Each order ships in several vacuum-sealed boxes, usually two or three for an L. The boxes do not always travel together, and each has a tracking number of its own, emailed at dispatch, so count the pieces against the packing list before calling anything missing. The import side is in our [delivery notes by country](https://orientalsofa.com/delivery/).

Delivery to the US and Canada is by tracked express courier — ask us for the current transit estimate.

For US deliveries we prepay import duties and the courier's customs fees, so there's nothing to pay at your door. If a courier ever asks you for a duty or fee on this order, send us the notice and we'll settle it.

## Who makes up Connecticut's Arab and Afghan communities?

Plans start from walls, not from origins: the same corner-to-corner measurements begin a majlis, a jalsa or a floor sofa drawing.

| Place | What the figures show | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Connecticut | About 25,900 residents of Arab ancestry, 0.71% of the state | ACS 5-year |

## When can the majlis move out to a Connecticut porch?

Hartford's climate normals for 1991 to 2020 put January highs near 36°F (2°C) and snowfall at about 52 in (131 cm) a year, so the majlis is an indoor room for most months. Five months, May to September, reach highs between 64°F (18°C) and 90°F (32°C), enough for a covered porch, and neighboring [Massachusetts](https://orientalsofa.com/oriental-sofas-in-massachusetts/) has the same five. Standard upholstery is made for indoor rooms, and a separate water-repellent range exists for terraces.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do you deliver to Connecticut, and what does a quote depend on?

Connecticut is part of the regular US delivery area. A custom quote is built from the meters of seating the walls take, the model, the seat height, the build and the backrest style. Delivery to the US and Canada is by tracked express courier — ask us for the current transit estimate.

### How is a custom majlis paid for?

Custom orders are paid in stages through a secure payment link — your quote sets out the schedule. You can pay with major credit and debit cards via a secure payment link. We never ask for card numbers, security codes or one-time passcodes by chat, email or phone.

### What foam and fabric go into a ready-made floor sofa set?

Ready-size sets are usually covered in a tightly woven cotton-polyester blend, while velvet and linen sets are separate collections. Seats use high-density polyurethane foam — ask us for the exact density for your build. Covers unzip and can be machine-washed on a gentle 86°F (30°C) cycle.

### If we are torn between two seat heights, can a layer be added later?

An existing set can be raised with an added layer: 4 in (10 cm) more turns a seat of 8 in (20 cm) into 12 in (30 cm), and 8 in (20 cm) more turns it into 16 in (40 cm). Stacked layers are separate pieces, so a top layer can come off as a guest mattress.
