# Oriental Sofas and Arabic Majlis for Virginia Homes and Cafés

Only about 44% of homes in Fairfax County are single-family detached houses, against 61% across Virginia, so an Arabic majlis in Virginia is planned room by room, from a compact L in a flat to a full U in a detached house. The Istanbul atelier also cuts seat and back cushions alone for café benches that a contractor builds.

## Questions buyers ask

### Can each wall get one long seat cushion instead of several pieces?

No single seat piece is longer than about 75 in (190 cm), which keeps patterns aligned and lets the pieces be vacuum-packed, so a longer wall is divided into equal seats with matching backrests. The drawing shows where each join falls, and the run still reads as one continuous seat.

### You don't have a store in the US. How am I protected when I pay?

Orders are made in our Istanbul workshop, and before a custom majlis ships we send photos and video of the finished pieces for your approval. We never ask for card numbers, security codes or one-time passcodes by chat, email or phone.

## Which layout fits a Fairfax flat, a townhouse or a detached family room?

Where a flat offers one long wall and a return, the plan is an L; where a detached house gives the family three walls to use, it is a U. ## How should an L be measured so the cushions meet cleanly at the corner?

1. Start at the corner and say whether each length includes it, because two people can read the same number two ways.
2. Measure the long side from its open end into the corner, then the short side from its open end into the same corner.
3. Let the designer identify the first run that fills the corner; the second-wall run is shortened by one seat depth, about 27.5 in (70 cm).
4. If the room has a hard size limit, give the maximum outer footprint too, for example 112 × 85 in (285 × 215 cm), so the drawing works inward from that line.

## Which seat height suits grandparents, children and guests: low, 12 in (30 cm) or sofa height?

Low seats from 4 in (10 cm) feel traditional, 12 in (30 cm) suits mixed ages and 16 in (40 cm) sits close to ordinary chair height; wooden-base models sit at 14.5 in (37 cm) to 16 in (40 cm) depending on the model. If someone at home finds low seats hard to get up from, choose 12 in (30 cm) or 16 in (40 cm), and pick the height first, because the matching table set is made to suit it. ## Can a café order cushions only, for benches a contractor builds?

Cushion-only orders suit cafés, restaurants and coffee houses where the bench base is built to a drawing. Give the finished length and depth of every run, whether the corner is included and the seat height of the base. Plain fabrics are chosen from a numbered color card.

> A coffee shop owner in Virginia had two seating areas, one L-shaped and one straight, and a contractor was building the bases at chair height, so only cushions were needed. The L measured 196 in (498 cm) on the long side including the corner and 55 in (140 cm) on the short side, with a depth of 24 in (61 cm). The owner first asked for plain leather for a clean, simple look. Leather would have pushed the project well past its budget, so the team suggested fabric models without wooden parts. Before shipping, the owner asked for progress photos and a re-check of every dimension against the bench drawings. The vacuum-packed pieces arrived and fit the benches. Pleased with the result, the owner then asked for help sourcing about five Turkish coffee sets for the restaurant side of the business.

## Can straight runs replace a fixed L for a family that may move?

Separate straight runs are built as independent units, each with its own armrests. Two seats of 72 in (183 cm) fill a 144 in (366 cm) wall and a 48 in (122 cm) piece closes the return, and the same three pieces line up as a straight run of 192 in (488 cm) in the next home. ## How does delivery to Virginia work, and why can two boxes arrive on different days?

Each order ships in several vacuum-sealed boxes, each tracked by a number of its own. Larger layouts travel in more boxes, and the carrier may not deliver them together, so read the packing list before counting pieces. > A buyer in Virginia ordered a custom red floor majlis for a room where the outer footprint could not exceed 112 in (285 cm) by 85 in (215 cm). The three seat cushions were specified at 57 × 27.5 in (145 × 70 cm), 84 × 27.5 in (213 × 70 cm) and 84 × 27.5 in (213 × 70 cm) in a firm seat foam, with backrests cut to match in a softer foam, plus armrests and a rug. The first card payment was stopped by a bank security check, so the buyer used another method. The set shipped in two boxes that the courier delivered on different days; the first held only two seats, which worried the buyer before a trip, until the team confirmed that the remaining parts were in the second box, which arrived shortly after.

## How long is porch season in Virginia, and what does a humid summer ask of the covers?

Richmond's climate normals for 1991 to 2020 show a July high near 90°F (32°C), about 46 in (116 cm) of precipitation a year and 8.5 in (22 cm) of snow. Seven months, April to October, reach highs between 64°F (18°C) and 90°F (32°C), but that temperature window does not establish outdoor suitability. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can the seats be firm and the backrests softer?

Seat foam is firm to medium-firm, and softer or firmer filling can be requested, so a firmer seat with softer backrests is a question for the designer. Seats use high-density polyurethane foam — ask us for the exact density for your build. Backrests and armrests use a softer foam than the seats.

### Is the wooden-frame majlis solid wood?

It depends on the model: wooden-frame models use solid pine or MDF for the base and back, and carved back panels are MDF. The Sedir Bench line sits firmer than all-foam seating and is a common choice for cafés and restaurants, and wooden-base models sit at 14.5 in (37 cm) to 16 in (40 cm) depending on the model.

### Which color sits better against a black accent wall, gray or maroon?

Against a black wall, maroon adds warmth and contrast, while gray reads calmer and more modern. If a rug is already chosen, match the majlis to the rug's strongest tone. Ask us about fabric swatches and a foam sample before you order.

### Do patterned and velvet designs come in any length?

Some patterned and velvet designs come only in standard 75 in (190 cm) modules with fixed backrest shapes, so not every design can be cut to custom lengths. Custom-cut pieces use plain fabric, so ask whether your design can be made to your walls before you plan around it.
