# Ready-Made Velvet Jalsa Majlis: Straight and Corner Modules

Three fixed module sizes make up the Ready-Made Velvet Jalsa Majlis, a ready-made velvet majlis of long and short straight seats and square corners, so a single wall, an L or a U can be planned with a tape measure. Straight seats are 75 in (190 cm) or 59 in (150 cm) long, and the 16 in (40 cm) seat height is close to a regular sofa.

## Questions buyers ask

### What's the difference between a low-seater and a high-seater majlis, and how high is each one?

A low seater sits about 4 in (10 cm) to 8 in (20 cm) off the floor, while a high seater is a raised majlis of about 14.5 in (37 cm) to 16 in (40 cm), close to a regular sofa. Most designs come in both, and only the seat base changes.

### Does a majlis have to run wall to wall, or can it cover only part of the room?

A majlis can cover only part of a room; wall-to-wall seating is a choice, not a requirement. Partial layouts suit family rooms, apartments and walls with doors, while wall-to-wall suits formal guest rooms.

## What sizes are the straight and corner modules?

| Module | Size | Where it goes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Long straight seat | 75 × 29.5 × 16 in (190 × 75 × 40 cm) | The main run of a wall |
| Short straight seat | 59 × 29.5 × 16 in (150 × 75 × 40 cm) | A shorter wall or the end of a run |
| Square corner | 39 × 39 × 16 in (100 × 100 × 40 cm) | Where two runs meet |
| Armrest, straight or round | Larger bolster for raised seats | Each open end of a run |

Foam inserts sit inside the velvet covers, and the corner is its own square rather than an angled seat end, so the three sizes combine freely. Made-to-measure builds, where every seat is cut to the wall, are compared with these fixed sizes on the [Arabic majlis overview](https://orientalsofa.com/arabic-majlis/).

## How do the modules add up along your walls?

Planning is plain arithmetic, because nothing is cut to length: a wall takes as many long and short seats as fit, and each inside corner takes one square.

For an L on a 114 in (290 cm) and a 98 in (250 cm) wall, the square sits in the angle, a long seat finishes the first wall and a short one the second. I would rather leave a small gap than force a module that does not fit.

> Every piece has a job: the seat carries, the backrest leans, the armrest ends the line.

## Why do the modules sit at sofa height rather than on the floor?

At 16 in (40 cm) the seat is close to a regular living-room sofa, so guests who rarely sit on the floor can sit down and stand up easily. Seats are about 29.5 in (75 cm) deep, and a thicker majlis backrest takes about 6 in (15 cm) to 8 in (20 cm) of that.

At this height I prefer a firm seat, since a soft one makes standing up harder, and these modules sit firm to medium-firm. Seats use high-density polyurethane foam — ask us for the exact density for your build.

## Which velvet designs come in these module sizes?

The black and ivory meander velvet in the photos is one of several velvet designs made on the same three module sizes, and the others are shown as fabric cards on request. For a shade outside a design's range, a made-to-measure majlis in plain fabric is the usual route. To feel the velvet first, see the [majlis sample box](https://orientalsofa.com/sample-box/). Ask us about fabric swatches and a foam sample before you order.

## What stays fixed on a ready-made module, and what can change?

- Fixed: the three module sizes and the 29.5 in (75 cm) depth.
- Fixed: the 16 in (40 cm) seat height, or 12 in (30 cm) on lower designs.
- Your choice: the layout, from one run to a U with two corner squares.
- Your choice: the velvet design.
- Not possible: custom lengths or depths.

When a wall needs other lengths, the same look is usually possible as a made-to-measure set.

## What should you check before ordering ready modules?

- Does each wall take whole modules, with the leftover space where you want it?
- Is there a door, radiator or vent where a module would stand?
- Have you counted one corner square for every inside corner?

Send the wall lengths and a photo of the room, and the team replies with a module list for your walls. Made-to-order sets take a little longer than ready ones — ask us for the current timing.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a ready-made module be shortened to fit my wall?

Ready modules keep their 75 in (190 cm) and 59 in (150 cm) lengths. When a wall needs a different length, the usual answer is a made-to-measure majlis, where every seat is cut to the wall.

### Can the corner square be left out to make two separate runs?

Two straight runs that do not meet are a normal layout: each run ends in an armrest instead of turning into a corner square, which suits a room broken up by a doorway.

### Can these velvet modules be ordered lower than sofa height?

Some designs come as 12 in (30 cm) modules instead of 16 in (40 cm), which suits a room where the seating faces a low table; ask which ones before planning.
