Who Is Oriental Sofa, and Why We Make Floor Seating

Oriental Sofa is an upholstery atelier in Istanbul, Türkiye, that makes Arabic majlis, floor sofa sets and wooden-frame floor seating, most of it to order. No distributor, store or local agent stands between the cutting table and the buyer, so your layout, your fabric and your questions are handled by the atelier that makes the set.

Questions buyers ask

Are you the actual majlis manufacturer in Türkiye, or a distributor?

We are the maker, not a distributor. Every majlis and floor sofa set is made in our own Istanbul workshop, from the first foam cut to the last seam. If you want to see the work before you commit, ask for production photos and short videos of finished sets from the workshop; personal details are always left out of them.

From the atelier

Why does an Istanbul atelier make Arabic floor seating?

Seating that runs along the walls of a room belongs to more than one culture. The Gulf majlis, the Yemeni mafraj and the Turkish sedir all gather a family and its guests on low cushions around an open floor, and the atelier was set up to keep that way of sitting at home in houses and apartments built for chairs.

Three ideas from the atelier's original mission explain why it works the way it does:

  • Keep the old forms: star, royal and palace patterns and kilim weaves stay in the range next to plain velvet.
  • Fit the room you have: a custom majlis is planned wall by wall, and any wall longer than 75 in (190 cm) is divided into equal seats rather than one long cushion.
  • Make it carefully: foam and fabric are cut to the plan you signed off, and our upholsterers in Istanbul sew each cover and fit it over its foam.

What does Oriental Sofa make, where does it ship, and who writes its guides?

Each of these is covered in full on About Oriental Sofa, the page for the whole company, so here each one gets a single line:

  • The workshop makes custom Arabic majlis, floor sofa sets in single, L and U layouts, wooden bench sets and made-to-measure cushions.
  • Tell us your country in the quote form and we'll confirm delivery.
  • The guides are signed by six editorial voices, each named for one part of the craft; they are editorial personas, not profiles of employees, and none of them claims degrees, awards or years of service.

What does the Oriental Sofa motto ask of the atelier?

In one line, the motto asks the atelier to keep floor seating at home in today's rooms without rushing the way it is made.

It grew out of a handful of values: comfort, variety, durability and seating with a story behind it. Each of them now shows up as a concrete step in an order, from the layout drawing for a custom room to a spare cover ordered after delivery, and the motto's five commitments walk through those steps one by one.

Why does every stage stay in one Istanbul workshop?

Cutting, sewing and packing stay together in the Istanbul workshop for a practical reason: a question about a seam, a fabric code or a seat height can be checked on the piece itself by the people working on it, instead of being relayed through a middleman.

We don't have a showroom; ask us for a sample box or a video call.

Instead of a shop counter, you get photos, short videos or a booked video call showing fabrics, foam and finished seating from the workshop.

Frequently asked questions

Is Oriental Sofa a Turkish company or an Arab one?

Oriental Sofa is based in Istanbul, Türkiye, and that is where each set is made. The seating itself follows Arabic, Yemeni and Turkish floor-seating traditions, which is why words like majlis, jalsa and sedir sit side by side in the catalog.

Does Oriental Sofa make seating for businesses as well as homes?

The same atelier makes made-to-measure floor seating for restaurants, cafés, event venues, coffee houses, mosques, community halls and resellers. A project starts the way a home order does, with measurements and photos of the space and a layout drawn for it.

Who draws the layout for my majlis?

A designer on the team draws it from the wall measurements, sketch and photos you send. The plan shows every seat and backrest with its size, and where a wall does not divide evenly, a seat is cut to length or a small filler piece closes the gap.
