Velvet floor sofa sets are frameless foam floor seating dressed in soft, smooth-pile velvet, with square backrest pillows and round bolsters that lean against the wall, in plain colors or with trellis-pattern pillows. Solid Velvet keeps one deep shade from seat to pillow, in more than ten colors from mustard and seafoam to brick red and gray.

Questions buyers ask

What's the difference between your velvet sets and the patterned woven sets?

Velvet sets have a soft, smooth pile and a richer look, while patterned sets use a hard-wearing woven upholstery fabric with traditional motifs such as palace-style designs. Product names can be confusing, so send a photo of the set you saw and we confirm which collection it belongs to.

Which seat thicknesses do the velvet sets come in?

Velvet sets are made with seats 4 in (10 cm) or 8 in (20 cm) thick, the two everyday thicknesses of the floor sofa range, and a single set can also take two stacked 4 in (10 cm) layers. Thicker 12 in (30 cm) and 16 in (40 cm) cushions are usually made to order, so ask whether your velvet color can be made at that height.

About Velvet & Linen

Solid or trellis: which velvet sets does the atelier make?

The atelier makes velvet floor seating in two looks. Solid Velvet keeps one color from seat to pillow, in shades from mustard and seafoam to brick red and gray, while Andalus Lattice sets a plain velvet seat under black-and-white trellis backrest pillows. Both are built on the same 75 × 27.5 in (190 × 70 cm) seat cushion used across Arabic floor sofa sets, and many families simply call the result a velvet majlis or a jalsah.

How does velvet look and feel next to a woven kilim cover?

Velvet has a soft, smooth pile that makes a plain color look deeper and richer, while a woven kilim cover lies flatter and lets its pattern speak for the room. In a room that fills with afternoon sun I would choose a mid-tone such as mustard or seafoam, and keep the darkest shades for rooms lit mostly by lamps in the evening. Velvet catches light like still water, while linen keeps it soft and matte.

  • Solid Velvet: one color throughout, square backrest pillows and small throw pillows, in more than ten colors
  • Andalus Lattice: a plain velvet seat with black-and-white trellis backrest pillows, in navy, emerald, mustard, red or black
  • Linen floor sofa sets: a matte, linen-look weave for rooms that want texture without shine

How long is each velvet run, and how many people does it seat?

LayoutVelvet seat cushionsSeating along the wallGood for
Single175 in (190 cm)A studio wall or a reading corner, two to three people
L-shaped2150 in (380 cm)A family corner, five to six people
U-shaped3224 in (570 cm)A guest room around one ottoman, eight to nine people

Each velvet seat cushion adds 75 in (190 cm) of seating and room for two to three people, so the three cushions of a U seat eight to nine. Whichever wall is seated second gives up one seat depth, about 27.5 in (70 cm), to the cushion already filling the corner. Foam also absorbs a measuring difference of around 2 in (5 cm), so a wall a touch shorter than planned still takes the set. Each shape is drawn wall by wall in majlis layouts.

How thick are velvet seats, and can they be stacked?

The velvet sets in the range are made with seats 4 in (10 cm) or 8 in (20 cm) thick, and a single set can also take two stacked 4 in (10 cm) layers. Stacked layers stay loose, so the top one lifts off as a spare floor mattress when guests stay the night. Floor sofa seats also come at 12 in (30 cm) and 16 in (40 cm) for anyone at home who finds a low seat hard to leave.

What is inside a velvet cushion, and how do the covers come off?

Inside each velvet cover is a foam block with no wooden frame and no springs, so the cushion takes its shape from the foam alone. Seats use high-density polyurethane foam — ask us for the exact density for your build. Its feel is firm to medium-firm, and a softer or firmer filling is available if you ask. Every cover has a zipper and comes off for cleaning, so ask us for the care notes for your velvet color before its first wash.

  • Seat cushion: 75 × 27.5 in (190 × 70 cm), 4 in (10 cm) or 8 in (20 cm) thick
  • Square backrest pillows: set side by side along the back of every seat
  • Armrest bolsters: round, 19.5 × 8 × 8 in (50 × 20 × 20 cm) each
  • Pouf pillows: 27.5 × 19.5 in (70 × 50 cm), three with the full set
  • Ottoman: a foam block of 23.5 × 23.5 × 8 in (60 × 60 × 20 cm), also with the full set
  • Small throw pillows: included on every layout

Spare covers and single pieces, from one seat cushion to a single backrest pillow, can be ordered later through the Arabic floor cushions range.

Which details stand out once velvet is in daily use?

Once a velvet set is part of the room, buyers tend to notice the depth of the color and the softness of the pile first. Under that soft surface the seat holds its shape rather than sinking toward the floor.

What should you confirm before a velvet set is cut?

Confirm three things before production: the length of every wall, the seat thickness and the velvet color number. Custom orders start with a layout plan for your approval. Made-to-order sets take a little longer than ready ones — ask us for the current timing. Each set is sewn and finished in our Istanbul atelier, and every box ships with its own tracking number. If you are weighing fabric against layout, what shapes a majlis quote sets out what changes a quote.

Can a velvet floor sofa be cut to fit an awkward wall?

Seat length, the number of pieces and the layout can all change to fit a room, though no single seat piece runs longer than about 75 in (190 cm). A longer wall is split into two or more equal cushions, which also lets each piece travel vacuum-packed.

Can I order a velvet shade that is not in the photos?

Plain colors are chosen by number from the fabric color card, so a velvet set can be made in a shade that has not been photographed yet. Ask us about fabric swatches and a foam sample before you order.

Does a velvet floor sofa suit a small apartment?

A single velvet set needs one wall of about 75 in (190 cm) and seats two to three people, which suits a studio, a reading corner or a narrow living room. Its seat is about 27.5 in (70 cm) deep, so the set leaves most of the floor in front of it free.
