Questions buyers ask
Is the matching rug a thick carpet, or is it a thin flat-woven piece?
The rug that comes with full floor sofa sets is a flat-woven kilim, not a thick pile carpet, so it lies light and flat in front of the seating. Ask us whether a matching rug is included with your set. The heavier rug-style weave on some majlis seating is a cover fabric for the seats, not a floor rug, so the two should not be confused.

Can I buy just the rug on its own, without the sofa, or a rug to match a majlis I already have?
Rugs can be ordered separately from a seating set. Identify the design you want and check the stock-size list for that design, rather than assuming every kilim uses the same dimensions. A rug intended for an existing majlis should be compared with the room plan and seating footprint.

Which kilim rugs can you order for a majlis room?
You can order a kilim in three ways: as the matching rug of a full floor sofa set, as a stock size on its own, or made to the size of your floor. The seating each rug is meant to lie in front of is collected under all our majlis and floor sofa designs.
Which stock sizes are kilim rugs made in?
Stock kilims are woven in the seven sizes below, though not every design is made in every size. A standard seat cushion is 75 in (190 cm) long, so the second column shows how the long side of each rug lines up with one seat.
| Stock size | Long side next to one seat cushion |
|---|---|
| 31.5 × 79 in (80 × 200 cm) | 4 in (10 cm) longer |
| 47 × 71 in (120 × 180 cm) | 4 in (10 cm) shorter |
| 51 × 79 in (130 × 200 cm) | 4 in (10 cm) longer |
| 55 × 83 in (140 × 210 cm) | 8 in (20 cm) longer |
| 63 × 98 in (160 × 250 cm) | 23.5 in (60 cm) longer |
| 67 × 94 in (170 × 240 cm) | 19.5 in (50 cm) longer |
| 79 × 118 in (200 × 300 cm) | 43 in (110 cm) longer, the largest stock size |
Ask which sizes your chosen color is woven in before you plan a room around one of them. Ask us whether a matching rug is included with your set.
How do you match a kilim to the seat fabric?
Match the rug to the seat rather than the other way round, because a run of 75 × 27.5 in (190 × 70 cm) cushions shows far more fabric than the rug does. A busy kilim-weave seat looks best above a quieter rug, and a plain velvet seat gives a medallion on the floor room to be seen.
- Red or maroon kilim-weave seats: a gray, anthracite or navy rug
- Plain navy or green velvet seats: a red or yellow medallion rug
- Cream or beige seats: a turquoise, brown or red rug
I would take the rug color from the smallest thread in the seat fabric, such as the orange line inside a red weave, so the floor echoes the seats without copying them. Pick the rug first or pick it last, but never pick it in a hurry.
What makes a flat-woven kilim different from the seat weave?
A flat-woven kilim is a floor rug with no raised pile, while the heavy kilim-style weave on the wooden bench majlis line is an upholstery fabric stretched over seats on a solid pine frame. The two look related in photos, yet only one belongs on the floor. With no pile under it, the ottoman table of a full set stands low and level on the rug.
- Ottoman table: 23.5 × 23.5 × 8 in (60 × 60 × 20 cm), set on the rug in front of the seats
- Pouf pillows: three in a full set, 27.5 × 19.5 in (70 × 50 cm) each
- Seat cushion behind them: 75 × 27.5 in (190 × 70 cm), seating two to three people
Which colors does the medallion kilim come in?
The stock kilim carries one geometric medallion, a stepped lozenge inside a patterned border, woven in nine colors: red, maroon, yellow, turquoise, navy, brown, anthracite, gray and green. Seen from a seat, the border reads before the center, so its color decides how calm the rug feels in front of a long run of cushions. I find maroon and anthracite the easiest of the nine to place, since they sit well beside almost any seat color.
- In front of Arabic floor sofa sets, as the rug of a full set
- Along a single run of seats, where the narrow 31.5 × 79 in (80 × 200 cm) size works as a runner
- On the wall above a majlis, where a flat weave hangs without the bulk of a pile carpet

How do you measure a floor for a made-to-size rug?
Measure the open floor between the seats rather than the whole room, because every seat cushion takes about 27.5 in (70 cm) of depth from the wall behind it. With seating along two facing walls, the floor between them is about 55 in (140 cm) narrower than the room itself.
- Note the length and width of the room at floor level.
- Take off about 27.5 in (70 cm) for each wall with seating.
- Leave the bare border you want around the rug, then send the result with your seating plan.
Single, L-shaped and U-shaped plans with their wall lengths are drawn on the majlis layouts page.
What do buyers check first when a kilim is unpacked?
Color is what buyers tend to check first once a set and its rug are unpacked, and the comparison they make is with the photos they ordered from. Daylight from a north window, warm evening bulbs and the seat fabric beside the rug each move a color slightly, so judge a kilim in the room at the hour it is used most.
How does a kilim order move from photo to delivery?
A kilim order starts with a photo, either of the color you like or of the seating it should sit beside if you already own a majlis. Several rugs can travel together in one shipment. Ready-made sets are packed soon after payment — ask us for the current dispatch time. For rugs made to your floor size, your quote shows the schedule for these pieces. The measurements that go into a made-to-size quote are set out in what shapes a majlis quote.

Frequently asked questions
How should a stock kilim be checked against the seating footprint?
Compare the available rug length and width with the open floor shown on the seating plan. Not every stock size is made in every design, so confirm the design and dimensions together rather than choosing from the proportions of a photograph.
Is every kilim design made in every stock size?
Not every design is woven in all seven stock sizes, so the color you like may come in only some of them. Ask which sizes it comes in before planning a room around one, or choose a made-to-size rug if none fits the open floor.
Can a kilim hang on a wall or work as a runner?
A flat-woven kilim works off the floor as well as on it. With no pile, it hangs flat on a wall above a majlis, and the narrow 31.5 × 79 in (80 × 200 cm) size runs beside a single row of seats like a runner.
