Arabic Sofas in the UAE: Majlis Seating Sized for Flats and Villas

A short wall of about 125 cm (49 in), common in Dubai flats, still takes an L-shaped Arabic sofa: the long side keeps standard 190 cm (75 in) seats and only the return is cut to fit. Villa majlis rooms across the UAE more often take a U, or a wooden-base majlis at 37 cm (14.5 in) to 40 cm (16 in) depending on the model, both made in Istanbul.

Which layout fits a Dubai flat: a short-return L, one wall or two separate runs?

I start most UAE plans from the shortest wall, because a flat rarely offers more than one long run free of a balcony door or a hallway opening. One straight run or an L suits most flats, and a living room broken up by doorways can take two separate runs with an armrest at every open end. Many UAE orders are also timed to a flat or villa handover date, so read the transit and customs step in our country-by-country delivery terms before you fix that date with the team.

Questions buyers ask

Is there a shop in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi where we can see the majlis before ordering?
There is no shop or stockroom in any emirate; the Istanbul atelier makes each set for its own order. Book a video call to see fabric rolls in daylight, or ask for a close-up video of a finished set in your color. Ask us about fabric swatches and a foam sample before you order.
WhatsApp calls don't connect from my UAE number. How do we hold the design call?
Ask the team for a video meeting link instead; the designer shows fabric rolls, finished pieces and your layout drawing on screen in the same way. Measurements and room photos work just as well in written chat, so the plan can move ahead between calls.

How do you measure a flat around a balcony door, a short return and a low window?

  1. Measure the shortest wall first, corner to corner at floor level; it sets the shape of the L.
  2. Measure the long wall the same way and note where the balcony door or hallway opening begins.
  3. Mark any window sill lower than 40 cm (16 in), the height of a standard backrest.
  4. Label each number as a wall or a cushion length, then photograph the room from every corner.

For a printable worksheet, use the room-measuring guide for a majlis; to test an L before you write, enter both walls in the majlis planner.

Why do UAE flats favor one 20 cm (8 in) layer while villa rooms take 30 cm (12 in) seats?

In UAE flats the 20 cm (8 in) seat is the usual choice, often asked for as one solid layer rather than two stacked 10 cm (4 in) layers. Villa majlis rooms more often take a 30 cm (12 in) all-foam seat or a wooden-base majlis at 37 cm (14.5 in) to 40 cm (16 in) depending on the model, which keeps the room formal and brings guests closer to chair height.

Can the seating stand in the middle of an open-plan living room?

Floor cushions and backrests are made to lean on a wall, so a run placed mid-room needs something solid behind it. A wooden bench majlis carries its own back. Some foam models can take a metal support behind the backrests, though pillow-style backrests cannot hang on one, so ask for the support as its own line on the quote.

Who lives in the UAE's flats and villas, and what does each emirate ask for?

Emirati nationals make up about one in eight residents, while many Arab expatriate families live in flats where one room seats guests and household alike. The plans we draw for Dubai flats usually turn on short returns and glass balconies, those for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain on villa rooms with wooden-back seating, and those for Sharjah and Ajman on rooms seated on every wall, such as 410 × 534 cm (161 × 210 in) with a matching rug.

When can floor seating go out on a UAE balcony, and how do you keep sand off it?

Balcony seating suits the five cooler months in the table; with July highs near 42°C (108°F), the majlis moves indoors for summer. No fitted dust cover is made, so on dusty days bring the cushions in or lay a breathable sheet over them, and wash the zipped covers once sand gets inside. Keep backrests against a solid wall, not balcony glass.

How does delivery to the UAE work, and when is the best time to call the atelier?

Each order travels in several vacuum-packed boxes, every box with its own tracking number. Foam seating is ready to use once it is unpacked.

Delivery to the Gulf is by tracked express courier — ask us for the current estimate for your country.

How do you time an order around summer travel and Ramadan?

When a family travels for the summer, time the order around the flight out and the return, and give both dates in your first request. Custom orders are sewn in sequence, so count back from departure with a margin for the queue.

Production time depends on your layout and the season — ask us for the current schedule. Ready-made sets are packed soon after payment — ask us for the current dispatch time.

What does a hotel supplier's majlis quotation need to list?

A hotel supply firm quoting its client usually needs a one-page specification: pine frames for bench sets, the upholstery fabric, every piece size, such as a 190 × 70 × 40 cm (75 × 27.5 × 16 in) bench with its cushion included, and the lead time. Trade buyers follow the same drawing-first route as homes, and fabric test documents are shared only where they exist for that fabric. Lobby and suite layouts are on our page of majlis seating for hotels.

Local questions

Do you ship to Dubai and the rest of the UAE, and how many days does delivery take?

Sets for every emirate are shipped once finished. Delivery to the Gulf is by tracked express courier — ask us for the current estimate for your country. Production time depends on your layout and the season — ask us for the current schedule. Your quote states how customs are handled for your order.

The courier asked us for a fee before handing over the boxes. Is that normal?

An import charge can be collected at the door; it is the local customs amount, paid to the courier and not to the atelier. Before paying, check that the request quotes the tracking number the team sent you, and forward anything unusual to us first.

Can the floor sofa double as a bed when relatives stay over in our flat?

Each seat piece is a full-length floor cushion of about 190 × 70 cm (75 × 27.5 in), so with the backrests lifted off it makes a firm single bed. A 20 cm (8 in) seat sleeps better than a 10 cm (4 in) one, and the zipped covers come off for washing after the visit.

The ad showed a carved wooden crest on top of the backrest. Can you still make it?

The carved crest that once topped wooden backrests breaks easily in transit and daily use, so current wooden-back sets are made without it. A taller back of about 60 cm (23.5 in) can still be drawn as a custom change before production.
