Which shape seats nine: a long L or a three-wall U?

A standard L seats five to six adults and up to seven, and a U eight to nine, so a gathering of nine around a tray table is a U along three walls. Long walls are split into equal seats, none longer than 75 in (190 cm).

Questions buyers ask

My room has three walls of 157 in (400 cm) each. What comes with a floor majlis that size?: A majlis on three walls of 157 in (400 cm) takes seat cushions, backrests, armrests and pillows on every side, with the corners planned so seats never overlap. Rugs, curtains and tables are quoted as separate add-ons. If you are torn between two models, ask for both drawn on the same measurements.
Where do you ship from, and can someone talk me through the order by phone?: Sets are made in our Istanbul atelier. A designer can go through models and measurements with you by phone or video. Ask us for a design consultation — we can talk through your room on a video call. We don't have a showroom; ask us for a sample box or a video call.

Where does a run stop in an open-plan room, and what does the designer need?

In an open-plan room, decide where a run should end when a counter or a half wall stands in for a corner, and mark that point on the sketch.
For a U, give the back wall from corner to corner and each side from the back wall to where the seating should stop.
Say whether the numbers are wall sizes or the seating you want, and add a photo that takes in the whole room.

Which build suits an open-plan room: wooden base or all-foam?

Floor sofas lean on a wall or another firm surface, so a run with nothing behind it needs a model with a wooden base and a wooden backrest. The Sedir Bench line also sits firmer than all-foam sets. A wooden base puts the seat at about 14.5 in (37 cm) to 16 in (40 cm) depending on the model, and none is made lower. Without wood, full-foam seats come mostly at 12 in (30 cm) and about 16 in (40 cm), and lower floor-style seats of 4 in (10 cm) or 8 in (20 cm) can be made on request.

Can you order only the majlis rug, and how big does it go?

A rug does not need a seating set: it can be ordered by itself. Ready-size rugs start at 31.5 × 79 in (80 × 200 cm) and go up to 79 × 118 in (200 × 300 cm), though some designs skip some sizes, and one can also be made to fit your floor; a big room may take two or three. Measure the floor for the rug while you measure the walls, and say early if you want one large piece.

Gold seats, teal pillows: how do you plan colors for a party or a camera?

Plain colors are chosen by number from the fabric color card, two-tone pairings are possible and most models can add gold accents, so gold seats with teal pillows is an ordinary brief. Behind a camera I would keep the seats one plain color and let the pillows carry the second.

What are Afghan toshak and balesht, and can a wooden bench come on its own?

A toshak is a 75 × 27.5 in (190 × 70 cm) floor seat and a balesht the backrest that leans behind it, two for every seat, so four toshak take eight balesht. A wooden bench is 75 × 27.5 × 16 in (190 × 70 × 40 cm) with its seat cushion, and bench frames are made in four fixed lengths, about 47 in (120 cm), 59 in (150 cm), 71 in (180 cm) and 75 in (190 cm); send a photo of the cushions you already own and the designer says what matches.

Do rugs and benches travel with the foam, and what time is it in Istanbul?

Rugs and other add-ons can travel apart from the seating, which is why every box has its own tracking number, emailed once the order ships.

Desert summers: how long is the patio season in Las Vegas?

According to NOAA station normals, Las Vegas has a July high near 104°F (40°C) and about 4 in (11 cm) of rain a year, so a majlis here lives indoors for most of the year. March to May and October to November, five months, average highs between 64°F (18°C) and 90°F (32°C), the window for a patio set. Regular upholstery stays inside; outdoors, only the water-repellent outdoor fabric is meant for the job, mostly in plain colors.
