Arabic Majlis · L & U
Handmade in Istanbul
Classic Star Yemeni Majlis seating keeps the long, low line of a traditional Yemeni sitting room, with light gray seats and backrests divided by black bands and armrests wrapped in a gold-and-black Greek-key weave finished with gold fringe. Low builds of 8 in (20 cm) or 10 in (25 cm) keep guests near the floor, and a raised build reaches about 16 in (40 cm).
The full piece list with sizes is below.
Cushions are pressed, rolled and vacuum-sealed for shipping and spring back to full size once you open them; they can't be re-compressed at home.
Your set ships in several boxes, typically two or three for an L-shape and more for larger layouts, and they may arrive on different days.
Every box gets its own tracking number, emailed as soon as your order ships.
Each shipment travels with a commercial invoice that lists the goods, their value, weight and materials.
Covers unzip and can be machine-washed on a gentle 86°F (30°C) cycle with a mild detergent; avoid heat, which can shrink them.
If someone at home finds low seats hard to get up from, choose 12 in (30 cm) or the 16 in (40 cm) sofa-height option; 4 in (10 cm) to 8 in (20 cm) suits a classic floor-style room or a prayer room.
| Seat height | Height from the floor | Sits like |
|---|---|---|
| 4 in (10 cm) | 10 of 40 cm | Classic floor-style seating |
| 8 in (20 cm) | 20 of 40 cm | The usual low seat, close to the floor |
| 10 in (25 cm) | 25 of 40 cm | A custom low height, made on request |
| 12 in (30 cm) | 30 of 40 cm | Easier to get up from than a low seat |
| 16 in (40 cm) | 40 of 40 cm | About the seat height of a regular sofa |
Most raised majlis designs can also be made at 8 in (20 cm), keeping the same look at half the height.
The frame of a wooden-base model holds the seat at around 14.5 in (37 cm) to 16 in (40 cm), varying by model, and it is not made much lower. For seating near the floor, choose all-foam seats at 4 in (10 cm) or 8 in (20 cm), or the same design without the base.
From the atelier
A quote for this design covers the seating: seat pieces, backrests, armrests in two styles and the matching pillows, each with its cover and filling. The marble-look nesting tables in the photos are room styling, and tables, rugs and curtains are quoted separately if you want them.
From the atelier
The seat foam is firm to medium-firm; softer or firmer filling can be requested.
A custom majlis quote covers seat cushions, backrests, two styles of armrest and matching pillows, all with covers and filling; tables, rugs and curtains are separate add-ons.

In many Yemeni homes the armrest bolsters, often called madaki (armrests), set the rhythm of the room, one beside each guest, and here they wear a black and gold Greek-key weave with fringe. The set is planned like every piece in the wider Yemeni majlis collection, from your wall lengths.
Traditional Yemeni-style rooms often keep guests close to the floor, and the lowest build here is a 4 in (10 cm) seat placed straight on the floor, while 8 in (20 cm) or 10 in (25 cm) can be made on request for a little more ease. At 16 in (40 cm) the seat reaches about the height of a regular sofa, which suits elders who find it hard to rise from low seating.
Each wall is measured from corner to corner, leaving out doorways, and the numbers reach the design team with a sketch or photos, in feet, inches or centimeters. Long walls are shared out in equal pieces of no more than 75 in (190 cm), which keeps the pattern aligned.
Both rooms in the photos use a U, and our page on U-shaped seating along three walls shows how corners are counted. A seat here is about 29.5 in (75 cm) deep, and a slimmer 19.5 in (50 cm) to 23.5 in (60 cm) can be made where the room is narrow. Custom orders start with a layout plan for your approval.
Light gray is the color in the photos, yet the same banded design can be cut in beige or any other numbered shade on the color card, with the black and gold Greek-key kept as the accent. Gold accents are optional too. Compare it with other gray and silver majlis rooms.
Ask us about fabric swatches and a foam sample before you order.
Once the seats are in place and the first coffee is poured, the room explains these words better than any list, dear reader. Production time depends on your layout and the season — ask us for the current schedule. Your fabric is cut and sewn in that time. Custom orders are photographed and filmed for your approval before they ship.
Both rooms in the photos use a U, but the same banded seats work as an L along two walls or as a single run, since every piece is planned from your measurements and each inside corner gets its own seat.
The designer spaces armrests by the length of each run, with two to four on a small L and six or more on a large U. Your drawing lists every one.
Single armrests, backrests and covers can be ordered any time, so extra Greek-key armrests can join the set later. Have your layout drawing ready when you ask, so the sizes match.
